Private Seller or Dealership?

Finding a second-hand car has never been easier with the help of the internet. In the past, shoppers had to consult the classified ads or scour local used car lots in the hope that they would locate the model they were looking for. But today anyone can search for any car online.

That is right. Nearly any vehicle that has ever rolled out of a factory can be found on the internet. But selection is not the only reason to perform a used car search . There is also the price to consider. Shoppers routinely save hundreds of pounds simply be comparison shopping.

Because car dealerships have many different ways of turning a profit, they often have different starting prices. This is true of all dealerships, even those that sell cars in the same area. Price discrepancies may range from fifty to a few hundred pounds. That is why it pays to shop around.

But the dealerships are not the only place to find a used car. In fact, second-hand vehicles are almost always less expensive when purchased from a private seller. Of course, there is a perfectly good explanation for this. Private sellers do not offer the safety and security that the dealerships do.

Years ago, both parties were somewhat risky to buy from. But then the dealerships saw the light and started offering consumers full and partial warranties. These warranties protect buyers who are unlucky enough to purchase a lemon. They also ensure that dealerships do a much better job inspecting vehicles before they put them up for sale, since they don’t want to be responsible for future repairs.
